Join the team at Lauriston Farm for a hands-on volunteering session helping to care for one of Scotland’s rare heritage grains.
The farm has around half an acre of Hebridean Rye, an ancient variety originally from the Uists. Volunteers are needed to help remove stray wheat plants from the crop by hand – a traditional seed-saving practice known as roguing. This careful work helps ensure a pure rye harvest and preserves this special heritage grain for future growing seasons.
No previous experience is needed, and gloves and tools will be provided. The session is suitable for anyone who is comfortable walking on uneven ground and bending to weed. Children under 16 are welcome when accompanied by an adult.
Dates: Thursday 10th, Friday 11th and Saturday 12th July 2026
Time: 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Location: Lauriston Farm Market Garden, Lauriston Farm Road, Edinburgh, EH4 5EX
Please note that these sessions are weather dependent. If poor weather means a session needs to be cancelled, registered volunteers will be contacted in advance.
If you’d like to get involved in preserving an ancient Scottish grain while spending an afternoon outdoors with a friendly team, sign up to volunteer and join the Band of Rogues.
